Is it under a shoe? Is it under the bed? Is it in the back yard? Is it somewhere in my head? Where is my passion and why is everyone else so convinced of theirs?
Then there are the stories of how someone tripped upon their current career and fell in love with it, instantly. Perfect.
It's not this perfect. My advice is to not wait around for the perfect epiphany but to try "trial and error". Make a list of possible career choices or a list of skills you would like to use. Then, start on your list. You will find that the audience at the comedy club does not think that you are funny: cross that off of the list (or at least move it down a little while you work on new material).
I agree, this “trial and error” thing sounds messy but if you are willing to get down and dirty, you will find your "thing". Waiting around for something to "happen" is guaranteed failure.
